NATP celebrates tax firm owners as part of National Small Business Week By: National Association of Tax Professionals
April 30, 2023

National Small Business Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of small businesses and their owners, which includes many of NATP’s members! In fact, more than one-third of members own their own firm.

Small businesses are an important part of the economy. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses make up 99.7% of all firms and employ half of all private sector workers in the United States. In addition, they produce 46% of gross domestic product (GDP) and create two out of every three net new jobs annually.

Small businesses also play an important role in tax preparation because they’re often owned by accountants who need help preparing taxes for their clients. If you’re thinking about starting your own practice, NATP membership includes resources to support your next adventure.

Marketing tips for small tax firms

Marketing your business is critical to gaining new clients and keeping the ones you have now. Marketing can be a daunting task when you’re just starting it out, but if you break it up into small, actionable items, you’ll be seeing the benefits in no time.

  1. Define your target client

    • You need to figure out who your audience is – or who you’re going to be tailoring your messaging to. Who are your target clients? What do they want from you?
  2. Create a website

    • It’s hard to exist in today’s business world without a website. In fact, many of your future clients won’t even consider you if you don’t have one.
  3. Start a blog

    • Blogging is one of the best ways to get your name out there, and it’s also a great way to build trust with potential clients. The more information you have on your website, the more likely people are going to be willing to work with you over someone else who doesn’t have any information at all!
  4. Build social media profiles

    • It’s a free way to reach new customers and promote your firm, but it can be tricky if you’re not sure where to start. The first step is building up your social media profiles – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram are all good places to start. NATP members also have access to create a profile on the search tool TaxProfessionals.com.
  5. Get on Google My Business

    • Google My Business is a free tool that helps you manage your online presence on Google Maps. You can add photos, videos and other information about your business to help people find you when they search on Google. Google My Business also lets you respond to reviews from customers who have been in touch with you via phone or email at some point during the year.

Small business owners are the heart and soul of NATP membership, and we proudly support you in any way we can for years to come. If you’re looking to join, enter code 23SOCIAL at checkout and we’ll waive the new member application fee!
